Is the U.S. moving closer to totalitarianism or is it just "business as usual"?

It's been suggested that the U.S. once considered to be the freest country in the world is ever more steadily moving towards a totalitarian type of ruling system. Do you agree or not? Not interested in predictable, finger pointing diatribes about current political "figureheads", such as POTUSes, either past or present, btw.. Am more interested in perceived changes in our government as an entirety, not just in terms of the executive branch, but in terms of judicial and legislative branches as well. Are our liberties eroding faster than at other times in history, or not, or has their been no change whatsoever? Please back up your ertions with supporting details. Thank you.
